A RARE THREE COLOUR JADE GROUP OF A BUFFALO AND QILIN
MING DYNASTY, 16TH/17TH CENTURY

The large group well carved as a recumbent buffalo with its head turned to the left with wispy ruyi clouds issuing from its mouth, falling and gathering to form a platform for a smaller qilin seated playfully on its left side, cleverly carved using the green portion of the jade, the buffalo's broad back highlighted in russet tones above a long stem of millet to the reverse, the stone of graduating tone from pale celadon to bright green, with russet surface inclusions
