    Lot Essay

Lucio Fontanas ceramic production constitutes an important consistency in the artists career. From the first realized works in Argentina in the 1920s to the activity in Albisola during the 1930s, a period in Sèvres from 1937 to 1939 until his following works on a different scale. The artist reached his highest level of maturity wth his technique with the architectural works, in which he combined his craft with the ability as a sculptor, with an eye for the environment and interior decoration. Beside working on big commissions for the entire floors and ceilings between the 1940s and the 1950s, Fontana also made some fireplaces (circa nine) for private homes.
Like his most noted ceramic works on a grand scale, the present Caminetto (Fireplace) is composed from the assemblage of more elements: the two verticals are animated by four horses that are rearing up, as if to follow the colored curls of flames that jump towards the ceiling.
