The Halpert mask is a very interesting example in the so-called hermaphrodite style, with one slit eye and one tubular eye. The Harley attribution of this mask is confirmed thanks to Lou Wells's archives. The number '119' and mask itself correspond to Harley's photographs and notes documenting masks he was offering. He marked this mask 'recent', even though he charged $80 dollars for it, compared to $30 dollars for the other feminine-style mask offered here from the same series. It corresponds to the group Wells lists as '1952 Series A, Numbers 1-128' (email communication, 21 October 2014). See also, Wells "The Harley Masks of Northeast Liberia." AA 10 (2) 1977: 22-27 for detailed discussion of Dr. Harley's time in Africa, theories on style and distribution of the masks he collected from the 1930's until he left Liberia permanently in 1960.
