The figure is a rare representation of a tall seated female bowl bearer in which the lid finial is carved as small figure. In most cases the lid is no longer extant, and of those we know within this small corpus of tall bowl-bearers are carved as zoomorphic figures. The oily surface at the bowl attests to years of anointment. Though we do not know the precise function of this figure, it was conceivably commissioned for several purposes: as a power object for an altar upon which sacrifices were made; a spirit figure used by a diviner; or as a display figure carried by poro graduates during their post-graduate ceremonies (Glaze in Arts de la Côte d'Ivoire dans les collections du Musée Barbier-Mueller, Genève, Vol.2, 1993, p.27). The use of a carved base supports one of the two former suppositions.
