The 14802 Jumbo Royal Oak in platinum has gained legendary status among collectors due to its incredible rarity, paralleled only by the other Gerald Genta time only icons from Patek Philippe which have been available in platinum: the 3700 and 5711 Nautilus. The reference 14802 was introduced in 1992 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Royal Oak and was produced as a limited edition of 1000 pieces, as kindly confirmed by the Audemars Piguet archive: 700 in stainless steel (with blue or pink tapisserie dial), 280 in yellow gold (with ardois, ivory or gilt dial) and only 20 in platinum (10 dark blue and diamond set and 10 with Tuscany blue dial).
This particular example is made even more desirable by its incredibly unusual colour change dial. Originally blue dial, over the subsequent years the dial has discoloured to cool grey, complementing the spectacularly heavy platinum case beautifully. With only one other platinum example having come to auction since the introduction of the 14802, this piece represents an incredibly rare opportunity to acquire one of the most iconic watches in platinum.
