Manufacture of reference 5004 was launched in 1994 in yellow gold, white gold, pink gold, and platinum. Patek Philippe discontinued the reference in 2009 in those metals however produced a limited series in stainless steel in 2010.
The reference 5004 is already considered a modern classic, deriving features from the reference 3970, which itself is based on the legendary reference 2499. However, the reference 5004 adds the complex split-seconds chronograph function, and is easily recognizable by the split-seconds pusher in the crown.
Reference 5004 was replaced with two slimmer and smaller split-seconds chronograph references - the cushion-shaped reference 5951 released in 2010 with an in-house calibre CHR 27-525 PS Q, and the reference 5204 released in March 2012 at the Basel Fair with an in-house calibre CHR 29-535 PS Q.
For an example of a reference 5004 in platinum, please see Lot 360 in this sale.
Reference 5004 is illustrated in Patek Philippe Wristwatches by M. Huber & A. Banbery, second edition, p. 312.
