Lot Essay

The shallow skyphos was introduced in Attica during the Late Geometric Period, circa 730 B.C. According to Coldstream (Geometric Greece, p. 117), the type was inspired by metal bowls imported from Phoenicia, which had concentric figural scenes on their interiors. For the type, compare fig. 35b & c, op. cit.
