Wearing the nemes-headdress with uraeus, the coiling body running over the crown of the head, the well-modelled ears prominent, the eyes delineated with extended cosmetic lines, and conforming brows, with high cheek bones, the lips pursed into a slight smile and the chin prominent

Lot Essay

After a career in diplomacy, Charles-Mélchior de Vogüé studied archaeology and travelled to Syria and Palestine. He became a member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres in 1868.
