A STYRIAN COMPOSITE WHEEL-LOCK SPORTING RIFLE
LATE 17TH /EARLY 18TH CENTURY
With swamped octagonal sighted rifled barrel signed 'Mathias Simme in Steir', engraved breech struck with maker's gold-lined mark and the tang fitted with peepsight, engraved lock (rubbed, light pitting), carved walnut full stock profusely inlaid with engraved horn and mother-of-pearl plaques (some replaced, the fore-end replaced towards the muzzle), decorated over the rear half with a complex pattern of ballflower scrollwork inhabited by animals and involving a boar-hunting scene on the cheekpiece, inset with a mother-of-pearl shield engraved with a knight, inlaid sliding patch-box cover inscribed with the initials 'S + HR', brass trigger-guard, iron ramrod-pipes, and later ramrod.
