An O-Yoroi-Style Suit of Armor
Edo period (19th century)
The armor lacquered gold and laced in blue with orange highlights and comprising a shallow, eight-plate iron hoshi kabuto with large standing rivets and mounted with gilt-metal shiho jiro and shinodare (ornamental strips on the helmet bowl) and surmounted with a wide three-stage gilt-metal chrysanthemum tehen kanamono and a decorative ring on the rear, the bowl fitted with a wide three-lame neck guard with a large fuki-gaeshi applied with stencilled doe skin and mounted with gilt-metal suemon kanamono, gilt-metal kuwagata-dai carved with chrysanthemums and gilt-metal kuwagata beneath a large gold-lacquer dragon maedate; the russet-iron face mask forged with scalloped edges and deep wrinkles, with a hinged nose piece and fitted with two-lame throat guard; the o-yoroi cuirass with stencilled doe skin applied to the muna-ita, waki-ita, oshitsuke no ita and sendan no ita and kyubi no ita and the top edges lined with decorative gilt-metal edging, the cuirass fitted with seven sections of five-lame tassets; large o-sode mounted with gilt-metal and shakudo hardware; chain mail and plate sleeves; lacquered-leather thigh guards; lacquered wood storage box; wood armor stand
