HERALDRY -- 'Sobranie gerbov vsekh nakhodiakhsia pri dvore Ego Impereratorskago Vysochestvo' [Collection of Arms of all attached to the Court of His Imperial Highness, drawn by Assessor Andrei Grekov], [St. Peterburg,] 1769.

(Some slightly soiled.) Contemporary red morocco, the covers stamped in gilt with the cypher of Tsarevich Pavel Petrovich with a ribbon-tied oval, spine stamped in gilt with floral sprays in compartments, gilt edges. Provenance: Paul I of Russia (binding) -- Ia. A. Zolotnitskii, Paris (1938) -- A. Herenroth.

UNIQUE EXAMPLES OF COATS-OF-ARMS OF MEMBERS OF THE COURT OF THE FUTURE EMPEROR PAUL (1796-1801), son of Catherine the Great.
The arms are of the following:
1. Count Nikita Ivanovich Panin (1718-1783), Minister of Foreign Affairs, tutor (362 x 308mm)
2. Arkhimandrite Platon [Petr Egorovich Levshin] (1737-1812), Spiritual Father and later Metropolitan of Moscow (350 x 268mm)
3. Timofei Ivanovich Osterval'd, Privy Councillor and Senator, tutor (347 x 240mm)
4. Mr. Epinius, Professor of Physics, teacher (384 x 305mm)
5. Petr Ivanovich Pastukhov (1739-1799), Deputy Privy Councillor and Senator, teacher of the Russian Language (382 x 300mm)
6. Karl Fedorovich Kruz (1727-1799), German Physician (357 x 298mm)
7. Vilim Vilimovich Fuzad'e [Guillaume Fousadier], French Surgeon (372 x 295mm)
8. Baron Karl Ivanovich von der Osten-Sacken (1733-1808), childhood friend, later Ambassador to the Danish Court (360 x 280mm)
9. Prince Ivan Sergeevich Bariatinskii (1740-1811), 'Knight in waiting' and close advisor (388 x 302mm)
10. Mr. Talyzin, Master Herald (358 x 308mm)
11. Mr. Volchkov, probably Sergei Savvich (1707-1773), the Translator and Secretary of the Academy of Sciences, Privy Councillor (344 x 306mm)
12. Mr. Krok, possibly the Privy Councillor and Cavalier of the Order of St. Anne (360 x 292mm)
13. Andrei Angilevich Grekov (1710-after 1765), heraldic assessor and artist of all these drawings (350 x 290mm)

The fine heraldic designs are by A.A. Grekov, who studied drawing at the Academy of Sciences and painting at the Kunstkamer. He executed engravings for book illustrations, worked at the Mint and in the Heraldic Office from 1750. He also taught at St. Petersburg University and the Academy of Sciences. His coat-of-arms includes a self-portrait. Of these arms only six are included in the General Books of Arms of Noble Families of the whole Russian Empire, started in 1797 and published in 10 volumes between 1799 and 1840.

Of particular rarity is the binding of the Tsarevich. Born in 1753 he was taken from his parents, Peter of Holstein-Gottorp and Sophia of Anhalt-Zerbst, later Catherine the Great, by his great aunt, the Empress Elizabeth, and was subsequently neglected. After Elizabeth's death his father succeeded as Peter III, his short reign ending with his murder and the enthronement of his mother. Paul succeeded his mother in 1796 and, following a very erratic reign, was deposed and murdered in 1801. Many of these members of his court had come from the suite of Elizabeth or his mother. Annals of the Society of Friends of Russian Books, col. IV, Paris: 1938, pp. 141-146 and ills. 7-11.
