AN EXCEPTIONALLY FINE AND HIGHLY IMPORTANT ATLAS OF THE LAFRERI SCHOOL, AND THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE WITH THE LAFRERI-NOBILI TITLE-PAGE

Of the 72 maps, 14 are known only by the surviving examples in this volume, and 18 are known in only two extant copies. The world map is one of only six copies recorded, and seven other maps are known in four copies or fewer.

This atlas is from the late phase of Antonio Lafreri's publications, after Nobili acquired the plates from Lafreri and others. Antonio Lafreri, a Frenchman from Burgundy (born Antoine du Pérac Lefréry of Besançon), settled in Rome in 1540, Italianized his name, and in 1544 set up business as an engraver and printseller in the Via del Perione. From 1553 onwards, Lafreri was associated in business with an established dealer, the elder Salamanca (Antonio). In 1562 Salamanca died, and a year later, the connection between the younger Salamanca (Francesco) and Lafreri was dissolved. From that date until his death in 1577, Lafreri published on his own account, and became the leading dealer in engravings in Rome.

Lafreri was primarily a dealer and publisher, rather than an artisan in his own right. He carried in stock the prints made not only by his own establishment, but by others, and his own name appears comparatively seldom in the atlases attributed to him. Claudio Duchetti, Lafreri's nephew, was part heir and successor to Lafreri's business, and the map of Pozzuoli (BHS.47, dated 1586) is signed by his heirs.

The title-page, with the added signature of Pietro de Nobili as publisher, is of special importance since few of the Lafreri-school atlases were issued with title-pages, and no other copy carries this second and final state of the title, with Nobili's name. This confirms the descent of the Lafreri business through Duchetti to Pietro di Nobili. The figure of the Titan Atlas supporting the world is first used on this title-page, and was later widely imitated (see back cover of dust jacket).

This collection is a true IATO (Italian-Assembled-To-Order) atlas. From the beginning these maps were sold separately, but the idea of assembling collections to the particular desires of a customer and the binding of the whole together in atlas form was developed no later than 1568. No two of these atlases are alike, either in number of maps nor in their content, be they Roman or Venetian. Venetian and Roman dealers borrowed from each other, sometimes using a map without alteration, at other times procuring the copperplate and erasing the original imprint and substituting their own. For this reason, IATO atlases are found with a mixture of Venetian and Roman imprints. The assembly of such collections resulted in the preservation of some maps that would otherwise have perished in their separately issued state.

This collection includes the world map of Gastaldi, as engraved by Forlani and published by Duchetti; 3 maps of America (Iceland, St. Domingo and Cuba); 66 of Europe and the Mediterranean (including 30 of Italy and 5 of Greece), Madagascar and Ceylon. 17 maps show cities that are finely detailed and bird's-eye views with part map and part view. The Roman publishers were partial to the depiction of notable historical events such as battles, sieges and regiments of the Turkish army. The last six maps in this collection are representative in that respect.

LIST OF MAP-MAKERS:

Over thirty Italian map-makers of the 16th century are represented, including: 8 by Lafreri; 23 by his successor Duchetti; 3 each by Paolo Forlani and Giovanni Francesco Camoccio; 6 by Ambrosius Brambilla; and two each by Giovanni Batista de Cavalleri, Michaele Tramezzino and Marcus Clodianus; and 5 with the addition of Pietro de Nobili. All of the maps are uniform in size save the one half-sheet (BHS.34 and 35), with no margins added to match size as is frequently found. Tooley, in his census which appeared in Imago Mundi II, records this collection, designating it "BHS" (for Beans-Henry Stevens), and the numbers below follow Tooley's designation for each of the maps in this atlas. The individual list of maps follows below.

CONTENTS:

Numbers in parentheses refer to the manuscript numbers on each sheet, upper right, referenced in David Woodward's Catalogue of Watermarks in Italian Printed Maps ca 1540-1600.

ENGRAVED TITLE (176): 386 x 263 mm. Watermark: 6-pointed star in circle. State II of Lafreri's title-page, bearing the imprint "Petri de Nobilibus Formis." The title-page is commonly associated with the name of Lafreri, though few of his atlases were issued with a title. In its first state, it is anonymous, but the fact that it bears a Rome imprint, though without specifying a publisher, and that Lafreri of Rome printed a list of the maps on sale at his establishment which more or less agrees with the contents of these collections, led to the association of such collections with the name of Lafreri. The title is surrounded by heroic figures with navigational instruments. For the first time, the figure of Atlas, with the terrestrial globe on his shoulders, is used to represent the contents of the volume. It was this figure, later used repeatedly by map publishers, and Mercator's actual use of the word Atlas that lead to this word becoming the universal title for a collection of maps. Lafreri's business was succeeded by his nephew, Claudio Duchetti, and the addition of Pietro de Nobili's name on the second state title implies that Nobili took over publication from the heirs of Duchetti. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF A LAFRERI ATLAS WITH THE LAFRERI-NOBILI TITLE-PAGE.

1. WORLD (176-177). Double-sheet engraved map after Giacomo GASTALDI by Paolo FORLANI (engraver) and Claudio DUCHETTI (publisher). Dated 1570 in the plate. 411 x 737 mm. Printed from two copper plates. Watermark: eagle in circle under crown D and E [Woodward 57 and 58]. THE "ZENITH OF MAP ENGRAVING" (David Woodward). Forlani issued four world maps between 1560 and 1570, the last 3 of which have identical titles (although each is a different size and different set of plates). This issue, along with the others, is a re-interpretation of Gastaldi, with the addition of a large and extensive southern continent labeled "Terra Incognita". By 1565, Forlani's maps of northern North America included the label "Nueva Franza" in recognition of the growing French role in exploring the still little-known continent. Despite Gastaldi pioneering the idea of separate Asian and American continents with the addition of the Strait of Anian in 1562, Forlani disregards this advance: North America is still shown joined to Asia, while many of the eastern coastal features compare well with modern maps. Forlani was skilled in accurately demarcating the geographic knowledge of the day. Florida and Cuba, for example, are quite accurately positioned. Unlike Forlani 3, which is embellished with two cherubs in the top corners blowing the winds, this map includes an extensive set of notes in each corner. In the lower corners are a key identifying places and a table of the moon. Shirley 121; Tooley 15; Woodward Forlani 35.04.
