MAN RAY
Photographs. 1920-1934. With a portrait by Picasso. Texts by André Breton, Paul Eluard, Rrose Sélavy, Tristan Tzara. Hartford, New York, and Paris: James Thrall Soby, Random House, and Cahiers d'Art, 1934.

Folio (312 x 238 mm). 104 black and white photographs. Original spiral-bound color photo-illustrated wrappers (some minor wear along edges and corners, minor cockling along bottom edge of wrappers and first and last leaves); black cloth folding case. Provenance: Arnold Newman (1918-2006), American photographer (presentation inscription from Man Ray on the title-page).

FIRST EDITION OF MAN RAY'S FIRST MONOGRAPH, PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY MAN RAY TO ARNOLD NEWMAN. A very good copy of this fragile book, COMPLETE WITH THE BELLYBAND; this one, as most, with the cancel title bearing the fictitious statement of "second edition" -- the publisher "attempted to generate demand where none existed by suggesting the edition had sold out... copies with the original title page are exceedingly rare" (101 Books, pp. 80-81). Cf. Regards à travers le livre 47.
