NICHOLAS II AND ALEXANDRA FEODOROVNA -- A brown leather portfolio blotter, the upper cover decorated in pen and ink with the steamship 'Poliarnaia Zvezda' [Polar Star], with a branch of blossom with a ribbon with the name in Russian, the upper left corner with the monogram of the future tsar, lower left inscribed '1894 A', the interior lined with burnt orange silk, the blotter pad inscribed 'For my darling Nicky dear from your ever very loving Alix 1894' on endpaper. Provenance: Alexandra Feodorovna (inscription to:) -- Nicholas II of Russia.
A HIGHLY ROMANTIC MOMENTO OF THE EARLY RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE COUPLE. Having met and fallen in love in Darmstadt in the spring of 1894, the tsarevich sailed in May for England in the 'Polar Star', where he spent six weeks following their formal engagement, being entertained at Windsor by Queen Victoria, who allowed the young couple to drive out without a chaperone. While there the future Edward VIII was born and the couple were chosen as god-parents. They also visited the Queen at Osborne, before he returned to Russia on the same ship. The Imperial yacht 'Poliarnaia Zvezda' later took the couple to Denmark and also on a state visit to France. From 1896 to 1914 it was the official yacht of the Dowager Empress, Maria Feodorovna, before ending its days as a target for soviet naval rockets.
