拍品专文

Although there is no documentary evidence that Waterloo ever travelled to Italy a few drawings of Roman ruins like the present one, a view of the palace of Septimus Severus in Darmstadt (Landschaftszeichnungen der Niederländer: 16. und 17. Jahrhundert: aus der graphischen Sammlung des Hessischen Landesmuseum Darmstadt, exhib. cat., Darmstadt, 1992, no. 42) or another of the Baths of Diocletian in the Rijksmuseum (inv. RP-T-1954-112) could indicate a visit there. He could also have been inspired by artists returning from trips to Italy.
