Lot Essay

Margaret of France was daughter of Francis I (1494-1547), King of France 1515-1547 and his first wife, Claude, Duchess of Brittany. While at court, she became a close confidant of Catherine de Medici. At the age of 36 she married Emmanuel Filiberto di Savoia (1528-1580) Prince of Piedmont and Duke of Savoia 1553-1580.
