The present drawing is a study for a monumental painting, The Departure of the Prodigal Son, that James Tissot executed upon his return from Italy, paying hommage to the Florentine Renaissance and the colours of Venice, in particular to the master Carpaccio. The painting was exhibited at the Salon in 1863 (Petit Palais, inv. PPP04856; James Tissot et ses Maîtres, exh. cat., Nantes, Musée des beaux-arts, 2005, cat. 6).

Étude pour le tableau monumental, Le Départ du fils prodigue, que James Tissot exécute à son retour d’Italie, tel un hommage à la Renaissance florentine et aux couleurs de Venise, notamment au maître Carpaccio.
