JEAN-PIERRE LAURENT HOUEL, REST ON THE EDGE OF A FOREST, PEN AND INK, BROWN INK, GREY AND BROWN WASH, WHITE GOUACHE, SIGNED
Houel, an artist from Rouen, returned to his hometown around 1799-1800 after his trip to Italy and a career in Paris. As the autograph inscription on the present drawing indicates, he executed this representation of the Caumont caves on the banks of the Seine, an open-air quarry famous for its stalactites and stalagmites.
