Lot Essay

The two scenes offered in this lot were most likely painted in the late 1780s and early 1790s, during one of Rooker's regular walking tours across Wales and the Southern English counties, particularly Norfolk, Suffolk, Warwickshire and Somerset. Kenilworth Castle, Warwickshire is one of at least half a dozen views of this subject by Rooker, four of which were exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1794. Rooker also painted several versions of Battle Abbey Gate, Sussex; a very similar watercolour to the one offered here was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1792.
