Lot Essay

In its use of black chalk, pen and brown ink for the contours and the white heightening the drawing can be compared to Pieter de Jode's Christ Delivering the Keys of Heaven to Peter in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (inv. RP-T-1953-98; M. Schapelhouman, Netherlandish drawings circa 1600, The Hague, 1987, no. 40). Like the sheet in the Rijksmuseum, this cannot be connected with any known prints or paintings by de Jode.

We are grateful to Peter Schatborn for having suggested the attribution to Pieter de Jode the Elder.
