Closely related to another drawing of oxen with a cart which was sold at Christie's, New York, 31 May 1990, lot 58 and afterwards at Sotheby's, London, 7 April 2000, lot 124 (L.-A. Prat, Théodore Chassériau: Cahiers du Dessin Français, No. 5, Paris, 1989, no. 65). It can also be compared to two watercolour studies of oxen in the Louvre (RF 24393 and 24395), which have often been associated with Chasseriau's large fresco of La Paix, painted in 1848 on the staircase of the Cour des Comptes in Paris and then damaged by fire in 1871 (M. Sandoz, Théodore Chassériau 1819-1856. Catalogue raisonné des peintures et estampes, Paris, 1974, no. 113 I, pl. XCIXa).
