Lot Essay

The Brandpoort depicted here consisted of two gates, the 'Buitenpoort' (outer gate) and the 'Binnenpoort' (inner gate). In this drawing the Binnenpoort is shown with a wooden structure on stilts, most likely a gatehouse, in front of it. The Binnenpoort and the gatehouse were connected by a wooden bridge to the Buitenpoort, which is not depicted in the present drawing. In November, Klotz made another view of Geertruijdenberg from outside the city wall showing both the Binnenpoort and Buitenpoort, now in the Provinciaal Genootschap, 's-Hertogenbosch (according to a note in the RKD).

We are grateful to Laurens Schoemaker for his help in cataloguing this lot.
