Lot Essay

According to the inscription this drawing was used for a sketch painted for Marie-François Ganne (1797-1861) who Roelofs calls an architect but who was a stonemason. He had established in Barbizon an inn which was especially popular with artists. The Auberge Ganne now serves as the Musée de l'Ecole de Barbizon.
