Lot Essay

This study is comparable in handling to three flowers studies which Constable painted in 1814, now in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (G. Reynolds, The Early Paintings and Drawings of John Constable, London, 1996, I, nos. 14.29, 14.30 and 14.31 and II, plates 1117, 1118, and 1119).

Flower studies are rare in Constable's work but those that are known vividly display his deep interest in the observation of nature and his considerable understanding of it.
