Advertisements for Mercedes in 1961 claimed powerfully: "The engineering and construction of Mercedes-Benz is aimed at perfection". This was the year that the company had reason to blow their own trumpet for they were celebrating their diamond jubilee, and rightly so, as the 300SL roadster was a magnificent car and oozed quality. For those whose pockets were not so deep but still wanted to own a Daimler Benz product, the company models included the smaller 180 series, 190 series with the attractive 190SL sportscar, 220 series and 300 series, the latter from which we offer a 1962 300d four door sedan. The factory produced just over 146,000 cars in 1962, of which just a fraction, 45, were to be 300d sedans.
This car was purchased in 1993 from the estate of the original owner by a noted Mercedes collector. Subsequently every endeavor has been made to preserve the car in as original condition as possible and we are informed that the Mercedes drives extremely smoothly as an original car should. The indicated mileage now is only some 47,200. The paintwork looks very attractive in grey beige and the interior is in extremely good order with plush red leather upholstery, door trim and carpeting. The car has a radio, clock and wind-up windows. The door, hood and trunk fit are also all good and the engine bay is original, dry and tidy.
Just 45 of the 300d sedans were built in 1962, which was also the last year of production for the car, and this is one of that limited number. In many ways this car heralded the passing of one era and the dawn of another for Mercedes and as Motor Trend commented on a 300 automatic, it "combines maximum dignity and impressiveness with minimum ostentation. Its interior is a symphony in tasteful luxury."
