The origins of the Mustang series go back to the 1950s Thunderbird which provided Ford with an effective competitor to the then Chevrolet Corvettes. By the early 1960s sales of American 'compact cars' were booming and Ford recognised the opportunity to introduce a new 'small size' sporting car to capture the young and sporting enthusiast market.
Launched in 1964 it was an immediate success, selling over one million cars in the first two years of production. This six cylinder, 3,398cc, automatic convertible was imported to the UK in the late 1980s from California. It has been an exibit in a small motor museum until recently and appears to be in a sound condition. We are informed that both the engine and transmission were rebuilt in recent years and the bills will be availble for inspection. The Mustang comes with a C&E customs form.
