In the early 1950s Porsche designers began working on a new model aimed at replacing the coveted 356. The task, along with a set of guidelines was given to Ferry Porsche's son Ferdinand. The new Porsche would have to be an evolutionary design and continue in the established Porsche tradition. Under a three man team comprised of Ferdinand Porsche, Erwin Komenda and engine designer Ferdinand Piech, the new Porsche was designed and perfected in a remarkably short time. Its debut as model 901 was at the Frankfurt Motor show of 1963 and the design was met with great enthusiasm from the public. The name was soon to be changed because the French constructor Peugeot had 'reserved' all type designations with three digits and a '0' in the middle, so the 911 was born. The result was one of the longest running and most successful sports car models in automotive history. The 911 model range was changed completely in 1974 and the 2.7 flat six (that had proved formidable in the earlier Carrera RS) was deployed across the range. Compliant with legislation, the car grew several pounds though thanks to bigger bumpers and other safety-derived reinforcements.
Presented in the period-appropriate color scheme of yellow with brown interior and attractively poised on Fuchs alloys, this Targa version is an ideal driving example. Whilst the interior and engine bay present very well, the paintwork is described as fair due to some blends in several places. Though not driven we are informed by the vendor that the car will be treated to a tune-up prior to sale thus interested parties are recommended to contact a Christie's specialist or inspect the car prior to the sale.
A 'real' (air-cooled) 911 is a joy to own and drive and with the removable Targa top, one is able to sample that throaty exhaust note to the fullest.
