Henry Ford said "Every time I see an Alfa Romeo pass by, I raise my hat". Since Alfa Romeo began in 1910 by producing a choice of three models in a modest factory on the outskirts of Milan, the name has been synmomous with racing and sports cars of engineering excellence and Italian flair. Alfa's first serious success in motor racing was in 1924 when they won the French Grand Prix and then went on to become world Grand Prix Champions.
From 1929 with the founding of Suderia Ferrari, the emergence of the 1750 twin-cam and the addition of the invincible Tazio Nuvolari to the team, until their retirement from Grand Prix racing in the early 50's, Alfa Romeo became a dominating name in Grand Prix and sports car racing. Since then a stream of brilliantly conceived sports cars and sports saloons has emerged from the Alfa Romeo factory.
Not surprisingly, when the SZ two-seater coupe was announced at the 1990 Geneva Motor Show as a limited run of 1,000 cars, the whole production batch was sold even before the production line began to move. The car's appeal lay in its dramatic looks, created in composite body panels bonded to a steel frame with an alloy roof and carbonfibre spoiler in a purposeful, angular, drag-reducing shape conceived by Zagato. These looks were complimented by performance - a top speed of over 150mph and a 0-60 time of 6.7 seconds - and exceptional road holding making the SZ a particularly rewarding car to handle.
All SZ's left the factory finished in red with tan leather upholstery. This example is immaculate throughout, has had but one owner, has covered a mere 24,000 kms and comes with its original Alfa SZ car cover, car cover bag, parts book and owner's manual in its leather slip case.
