14 December 2000
$20, 1854 Small Date. MS-62 (PCGS). Breen-7167. Repunched 154 in date. Highly lustrous satiny honey gold with strong olive iridescence. Definitely choice for the grade.
A much rarer date in Mint State than its circulation strike mintage of 757,899 pieces might suggest. This date is typically found in VF to EF, and sometimes AU. As David Akers noted: "In Mint State condition, the 1854 is definitely rare." The present specimen is the only example of the date graded MS-62 by PCGS; just two other examples of the date (from all numismatic sources) have received higher grades from that organization. A splendid opportunity.
