Prooflike 1857-S Double Eagle
$20, 1857-S MS-63 DMPL (PCGS). Variety-20D, Bold 7, Faint S. Very light surface marks are reflected in fully prooflike deep yellow gold surfaces. Few very minor surface marks and hairlines are visible. Very sharply struck.
This obverse has a bold 7 that is heavier than other digits. Lower serif of 1 is doubled. The reverse has a very faint S, resulting from improper depth of the mintmark punch. Collecting 1857-S double eagles in high grade and by die varieties is the stuff of which numismatic dreams are made. This sale provides the opportunity. Amazing! [SSCA 0580].
