$5, 1855 AU-58 (PCGS). Frosty light yellow gold with hints of reflective mirrored fields. The obverse is exceptional while the reverse has some marks. A delightful example that journeyed from Philadelphia to San Francisco, then returned via the S.S. Sonora, the Panama Railroad, and the S.S. Central America before being lost in the Atlantic. Not only are these coins numismatically desirable, but they represent a remarkable history of westward expansion and the Gold Rush.
