$5, 1855-S AU-55 (PCGS). Highly lustrous with frosty surfaces. Some marks, etc., are typical of the grade. Earliest readily collectible half eagle of the San Francisco Mint, the 1854-S being for all practical purposes impossible to obtain (only three are known).
Walter Breen, in his Complete Encyclopedia described this issue as "prohibitively rare above EF." An exciting opportunity for the specialist to acquire an example of this moderately low mintage issue. Just 61,000 half eagles were struck in this second year of San Francisco Mint operations. Only five AU-55 and 10 finer examples, nine AU-58 and one MS-62.
