The (Sheffield) Wednesday won their first-ever Division 1 Championship this season with 42 points, Aston Villa being runners-up on goal difference with 41 points.
Fred Spiksley was born in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, on 25th January 1870 and joined Sheffield Wednesday from Gainsborough Trinity in January 1891. He won a Division 2 Championship medal with Wednesday in season 1899-1900 and scored both of their goals in the 1895-96 F.A.Cup win when they defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 in the final played at the Crystal Palace. He played a total of seven times for England at full International level between 1893-98 and made two appearances for the Football League (see following lot). He joined Glossop in October 1904 and Leeds City in 1905. Thereafter their were brief periods with Southend United and Watford before becoming a coach in Nuremberg Germany. He was interned during W.W.I. A famous and very well respected player in his day, Spiksley died on 28th July 1948.
