Milo of Croton was a legendary Greek athelete from the 6th century B.C. Who was renowned for his strength. He met his death, however, when on finding an oak tree stump, partly split and wedged, decided to test his ability and split it further. All he suceeded in doing was to remove the wedge and the tree snapped close, trapping his hands. Milo was thus left to the peril of the wild beasts.
