GERRIT JAN VAN HEEK (1880-1958)
Gerrit Jan van Heek was an outstanding Dutch field sportsman. The son of a textile industrialist, who owned a beautiful estate outside the town of Enschede.
It was there that Gerrit Jan developed his great interest in nature and passion for shooting. He had a wide range of talents and wrote several books on shooting and was the author of two books on the noted German 19th century wildlife painters R. Friese and W. Kuhnert. His travels in pursuit of big game hunting took him across Canada, Norway, Romania and even into the Arctic Circle.
His favourite rifles were made by W.W. Greener and the photograph above shows him with a single barrel express Greener rifle .450/.400 in 1925 in New Brunswick, Canada.
During his life he became aware of the need for protection of wildlife and nature and was one of the founders of nature conservation organizations in the Netherlands.
