Lot Essay

According to Baden (op.cit.), Le Jardinier is one of fourteen subjects from the Fêtes Italiennes series woven at Beauvais after designs by François Boucher between 1746 and 1762. Le Jardinier is recorded as being woven eleven times.

A wider version is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and features two marble statues flanking the main scene. Another example is in the Baron Guy de Rothschild Collection, formerly in the Château de Ferrières (Standen, op.cit.).
