In the catalogue of his collection there is only one rug where Mr Kirchheim strongly disputes the date attribution of the cataloguer; no.171, a rug with identical field design to that seen here (Kirchheim, E. Heinrich et al.: Orient Stars, a Carpet Collection, London, 1993). That the present piece is a later rendering of the design is indisputable. The Kirchheim rug would thus appear to be a prototype from an earlier period. A very similar piece to the Kirchheim rug, in the Textile Museum, Washington, has been dated to the 18th century (Mackie, Louise W.: The Splendour of Turkish Weaving, Washington D.C., 1974, no.44, p.39 and pl.p.86).
