A BLUE AND WHITE QUADRANGULAR JAR
choson dynasty (18th century)

Of tapered square form with wide, rounded shoulders, square upright neck with flat rim and square foot with recessed base; painted in outlines and washes of underglaze blue with the Shipjangsaeng (The Ten Signs of Long Life) in four panels on each of the sides of the jar: cranes and bamboo, clouds and sun; mythical Taoist tortoise, water, a range of mountains and the sun; two deer, plants, clouds, pine and an elongated phoenix; pine, bamboo, plants and phoenix-tail cloud; the neck additionally painted with a collar of yo'i-shaped clouds, alluding to pulloch'o, the mythical Taoist fungus, and a single line below the neck--5½in. (14.2cm.) high, 5 1/8in. (13cm.) diameter, restoration to rim and neck, three hairline cracks from rim, small discolorations to three panels, minor chip to one shoulder
