In the above match, played on 16th May 1948 at Turin, England defeated Italy 4-0, with goals from Mortensen, Lawton and Finney (2).
This particular match is regarded by many as one of the finest performances by an England International team away from home. The match, which was played in front of 80,000 fanatical Italian supporters started with Italy bombarding Frank Swift in the England goal. England suddenly hit Italy on the counter-attack and played a long ball through to Mortensen who raced from the half-way line into the penalty box and from an acute angle smashed the ball high into the net. This seemed to deflate the Italians and England took control of the game and were worthy 4-0 winners.
