    A BÖTTGER RED STONEWARE SEATED PAGODA FIGURE
    CIRCA 1715
    Seated with his right hand resting on his raised right knee, his left leg tucked beneath his right, his pierced mouth open in a laugh, his bald head with pierced ears, a loose garment incised with folds draped over his shoulders leaving his torso partly exposed (slight chipping to toes, minute chip to underside of footrim)

    (The interior attached with a paper label inscribed 2541 in ink, the stoneware body beneath label with 180 in ink).

    The form of these seated figures was derived from Chinese originals where they represented Milefo, or Buddha Maitreya, the Buddha of the Future, who is associated with wealth and fortune.
