The design of this carpet draws heavily upon Donegal carpets, particularly those designed by Gavin Morton. A very similar example can be found in Haslam, M.: Arts & Crafts Carpets, London 1991, pl.67, p.106 which was designed both by Gavin Morton and G.K.Robertson. This design is also illustrated,(pl.68, p.107), on a pair of carpets in the Hall at Dixcot, Streatham Park, London, a contemporary house designed by Walter Cave in 1900.
The structure of the present carpet, however, is very different. It is woven on yellow flax warps and has thick bundles of flax wefts between each row of knots. The trimming of the knots is also unusual, appearing almost to have been done before each row of knots was packed down and therefore giving the impression of having been cut on the slant.
