Mid-17th Century, attributed to Everaert III Leyniers
Depicting a peasant and his wife beating flax in the foreground while two children frolick in the hay, in the background a woman is working in front of a house while a man is walking away from the village, all within a ribbon-tied, fruit and flower garland border, centered to the top with a cartouche that reads SEPTEMBER, flanked by putto, the sides centred by parrot medallions, the corners with putti

Lot Essay

A larger tapestry signed by Everaert III Leyniers, with identical borders and depicting the month of May and thus possibly from the same set, was sold anonymously at Sotheby's London, 30 April 1976, lot 16. Everaert (d. 1680) led the very prolific and successful weaving workshop that was established by his ancestors in the 16th Century and was dean of the craft in 1635.
