Made for James Brydges, advanced to the Dukedom in 1719 and known as 'Princely Chandos'. J. Goldsmith-Phillips, China-Trade Porcelain, p. 84 calls him "one of the most notable figures of 18th century England". See D.S. Howard, op. cit., London, 1974, p. 181 for another wall fountain or cistern from the same service. Three fountains from the service were sold Christie's, London, December 1919.
