Euterpe was the muse of music and lyrical poetry and this figure, together with lot 318, is from a series of Apollo and the nine muses derived from the paintings by Luis Paret. For the series in the Museo Arqueológico Nacional, Madrid, see Carmen Manueco Santurtún et. al., 'Manufactura del Buen Retiro 1760-1808' Exhibition Catalogue (Madrid, 1999), pp. 416-425, and p. 422, no. 194 for a figure similar to the present lot. It is interesting to note that the circular plinth bases of this series are sometimes moulded with the name of the muse represented, as with the present lot. The plinth bases without names are slightly more shallow in depth, as with lot 318. For other named figures in the same series, see the figures of Erato and Thalia on p. 423 and p. 425.
