This mosaic was part of a large "carpet style' floor. According to Kondoleon (Antioch, The Lost Ancient City, p. 158), in mosaics of this style, "the figures were spread across a neutral ground," with no attempt at "spatial illusion or depth." For a similar tigress and cub, positioned with other animals around a central figure of a lion, see no. 43 in Kondoleon, op. cit.; and for a tigress with two cubs hunted by Meleager see p. 253 in Cimok, ed., Antioch Mosaics.
