Lot Essay

The decorative porte-papiers tablet, with imbricated shell paterae for cards, relates to one paired with a barometer and hanging beside an overmantle glass in an early 19th century engraving by J-J. Granville (N. de Reynies, Le Mobilier domestique, vol. l, Paris 1987, p.632).
