A Chinese circular cinnabar lacquer 'dragon' box and cover, early 19th century
the domed cover carved in relief with a writhing five-clawed dragon pursuing the flaming pearl amidst crashing waves, above two pairs of dragons chasing flaming pearls on the sides of the box and cover, with a chrysanthemum lappet band above the foot carved with a key-fret border, the interior and underside black lacquered -- 6¼in. (15.8cm.) diam.
