Four services were made with the arms of Seton quartering Hay, for three different generations of the family. The first (with blue and white borders) was for the Sir Henry Seton, 4th Baronet (d 1788); the last (Canton famille rose) for Sir Henry John Seton, 6th Baronet (d 1868). This Fitzhugh service and a 'Palaceware' tea service were made for Sir Alexander Seton, 5th Baronet (succeeded 1788 and married 1795). See Howard, op. cit., vol II, p 541 for a discussion of the family and references to the other services.
Sir Alexander and his three younger sons were all in the Hon. East India Company. He died on 4 February 1810 at only 37 years of age, possibly before this service had even returned from China, perhaps accounting, at least in part, for its exceptional condition.
