A CIRCULAR CARVED IVORY MEDALLION
Byzantine, probably 17th century
Carved in relief with the Virgin and Child on the obverse and an evangelist on the reverse.
In a baroque, enamelled silver mount set with freshwater pearls.
1¾ in. (4.5 cm.) diam.
3¼ in. (8.2 cm.) diam., including mount

Lot Essay

Although the present ivory must date from significantly after the Fall of Constantinople in 1453, its iconographic scheme and figure style are in conformity with traditional precedents. The elegant mount may very possibly be contemporary.
