    Lot Essay

Some of the finest Meiji era cloisonné was produced in the studio of Ando Jubei of Nagoya, whose company still thrives. Ando employed great artists whose names at the time were often overshadowed by that of the company. Among them Hattori Tadasaburo (lot 168, 255) and Kawade Shibataro (1856-1921) (Lot 170) were innovators of moriage work, or enamelling in relief. Kumeno Teitaro (Lot 119) was also associated with the group.
